Beijing is a metropolis located in the Northern region of the People's Republic of China, and is the country's capital. It is the second largest city, following Shanghai and is a powerhouse in transportation with several outlets of transport available, connecting travelers to various cities. The history of civilization in Beijing is long, and rich, with the earliest discovered proof of life in the region, include fossils belonging to man that date back as far as two hundred and fifty thousand years ago. Known as one of the world's great cities, Beijing has stood the test of time, through war, famine, and natural disaster.


Beijing is placed in the Northern-most tip of the triangular North China Plain, and is surrounded by mountainous formations, and lush vegetation. The terrain of Beijing is rugged, and is also agriculturally booming, with fertile, workable soil. The climate is a tropical, yet continental type, with hot summers, high in humidity, and cold winters. Though Beijing is a sub tropical climate, the weather is generally dry all year long. The air quality in the region is far below the world standards, according to the World Health Organization, and more than seventeen million dollars was spent in cleaning up the air pollution in Beijing, to prepare for the 2008 Summer Olympics. Since then, environmentalists have spent billions of dollars in repairing the living conditions of the city, by planting trees and implementing the largest fleet of buses powered by natural gas in the world.


Beijing is by far the quickest advancing nation in the world, today, with a staggering population of citizens and a strong economical backbone. Culturally, Beijing is recognized for many outstanding achievements such as the Peking Opera. The Peking Opera is a performance combining song, dance, and actions, and is highly regarded as one of China's greatest achievements. Travelers and locals also love venturing into what is called The Forbidden City, which is a huge palace compound, and former home of Ming and Qing dynasties. The Forbidden City is also host to many awe-inspiring gardens and traditional Chinese monuments, as well as the popular Palace Museum.


More recently, Beijing is famous for hosting the 2008 Summer Olympic games. Preparation for the Olympic games was time consuming, and took billions of dollars. This included the construction and preparation of the Beijing National Stadium. There are several sports teams in the region, such as the Asia League Ice Hockey, Women's Chinese Basketball Association, and the Chinese Baseball League. Aside from the historical appeal and the recreational sporting events available in Beijing, it is widely acclaimed for it's numerous educational facilities. Beijing is a huge city with over sixty secondary learning academies and universities. Education is a very important issue in Beijing, and great steps are taken to improve the conditions of their facilities. Many of the schools in the region are known internationally, and are quite popular for learning abroad.
